Practice Random Kindness and Senseless Acts of Beauty

April 3, 2009

“I expect to pass through life but once. If, therefore, there be any kindness I can show, Or any good thing I can do to any fellow being, Let me do it now, as I shall not pass this way again.”
-William Penn

A random act of kindness is a selfless act performed by a someone that either  assists or cheers up another individual for no reason… other than to make the other person smile, or be happier. Either spontaneous or planned in advance, random acts of kindness are encouraged by various communities.

The Random acts of kindness foundation was established in 1995 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation is a resource for people committed to spreading kindness. They provide a wide variety of materials and resources on their website that can assist you in creating an act of kindness and/or learn about the foundation and it’s mission. While reading through the website and looking up information on-line I was surprised to learn about how wide-spread this movement/idea/foundation is.

Some examples of acts of kindness are:

  • Say thank you
  • Get OFF the phone at check-out counter, and say “Hello” (this is an easy one and something that people should do naturally)
  • Smile
  • Give someone a compliment

Meditation

March 26, 2009

“Meditation is a mental discipline by which one attempts to get beyond the reflexive, “thinking” mind into a deeper state of relaxation or awareness. Meditation often involves turning attention to a single point of reference… Different meditative disciplines encompass a wide range of spiritual and/or psychophysical practices which may emphasize different goals — from achievement of a higher state of consciousness, to greater focus, creativity or self-awareness, or simply a more relaxed and peaceful frame of mind. Giving this sense of relaxation and peace, meditation ultimately leads people to find peace within themselves.”
Wikipedia

Practiced regularly meditation will promote a sense of calm and control, you’ll feel more relaxed and happy. Your ability to concentrate will be greater, and you won’t be as stressed. You’ll feel more peaceful and relaxed about everything. One of the greatest benefits of meditation is learning to go with the flow.

There are many forms of meditation but the easiest form is “Breathing Meditation.” In this meditation you simply pay attention to your breath and try to ignore all external distractions.

The benefits of meditation are endless click here to see a list of 100 benefits of meditation.

You Are What You Eat

March 20, 2009

ORGANIC FOOD
It may cost a little more, but the benefits are priceless. It’s becoming easier and easier to eat organic as more stores and restaurants provide organic options. Making the choice to go organic is something everyone should take advantage of.

It’s Good For YOU!

One of the most significant health benefits associated with organic food is the fact that these products are free from any chemicals.

A number of recent research studies have also considered the benefits of eating organic food. Some of these research endeavors focused on the effects organic foods might have to lower the incidence of certain diseases, including some types of cancer.

Organically grown fruits and vegetables have higher levels of antioxidants than traditionally cultivated produce. As a result these items reduce the risk of certain types of cancers.

If you are interested in making certain that the food you  consume promotes good health, then your should  turn to organic food products.  By eating organic food, you will obtain optimal levels of wellness,  and take important steps towards preventing serious diseases such as cancer.

Organic facts

  • The average non organic fruit contains more than 20 pesticides
  • Organic food is much more rich in vitamins, minerals and fiber and retains the levels of nutrients for much longer
  • Your body will be more resistant to disease as it will have higher levels of the essential nutrients it needs to fight off infection
  • You will have more energy through consuming lower levels of toxins and chemicals that slow your body down
  • Organic food producers must meet stringent standards

Here are a list of place where you can buy organic food:

Book: The Last Lecture

March 12, 2009

“We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand.”
—Randy Pausch

80307The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch, is a rough transcript of the “Last Lecture” he gave at Carnegie Melon. A professor giving a last lecture is common- however, Randy Pausch was terminally ill when he gave his.

The lecture was entitled: —“Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams” and it wasn’t about dying. It was about remembering to laugh, overcoming obstacles, appreciating the gifts you receive, paying attention to what you think is important, working hard and listening well, telling the truth and enabling the dreams of others.

I read this book, prior to his death in July of 2008. It was strange reading it- and then learning that he died afterward. It was like you got to know who he was while you read it… and you knew while you were reading it that he was still alive- but would ultimately die, and it was just a matter of time.

Then he did, and for some reason the whole book seems more credible, it is/was an odd kind of realization.

I reccomend you read it. A lot of the ideas he talks about, you’ve heard before… but there is a sweet sadness to it all that is beautiful, and insightful.

Things to think about… #2

February 23, 2009

Social Media and YOU!

In keeping with the idea of being better on all levels, I will propose a question I read about in the article:  Does Social Media Make Us Better People?

picture-1The fact that you are reading this implies that you can use a computer, and that you are familiar with “surfing the web.” As a result one can assume that you are possibly registered with a social networking site, or use the internet to keep in-touch, or communicate with people via something other than e-mail… or, that you post information about things you find interesting or important online.

What do you think?

“…is there a case to be made that social media – the fact that everyone is now a publisher and a distributor of content – might improve our behavior, both in public and private? Or is that wishful thinking?”

…the impact of ATTITUDE

February 20, 2009

ATTITUDE

“…life is 10% what happens to me, and 90% how I react to it.”

The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life.

Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill. It will make or break a company … a church … a home.

The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past. We cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable.

The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude … I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me, and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you … we are in charge of our Attitude.
By Charles Swindoll

Benefits of a better attitude:

1. Your relationships are fuller, more harmonious, and more beneficial. The better your attitude, the easier it is to resolve conflicts.

2. Your health is better. Research shows that negative emotions of all kinds are detrimental to your long-term health and that positive emotions are beneficial for your body and mind.

3. You will make more money. People are hired and promoted as much for their attitudes as for their skill and knowledge.

4. You make better decisions. Studies show that people are more creative and better able to reason in a good mood than in a bad mood.

5. You will feel happier more often.

To have a good attitude all you have to do is make a conscious decision. You have to decide to… have a good attitude.

Make it a daily goal, and everything else will follow.

Adjusting ones attitude is a vital part of self-improvement. For example the Serenity Prayer is a core element of most 12-Step programs.  It focuses on assessing a situation prior to reacting to it. Which leads people to think logically about their attitude and actions in response to the event, opposed to letting the event control your attitude.
